Talking Trash, Recycling, & Utilities

Trash & Recycling (& Hazardous Waste Disposal)

Trash is a complicated issue in the Big Bear Valley because of the different jurisdictions between County and City.

There are two trash service providers:

Big Bear Disposal (serving City of Big Bear Lake within the 92315 zip code, with optional residential service available in Fawnskin & Lake Williams)

Community Services District (CSD) (serving the unincorporated areas of Big Bear City, Erwin Lake, and Sugarloaf)

Baldwin Lake residents must take their waste to the County of San Bernardino transfer station (dump) on the east end of the valley, on Holcomb Valley Road, which is open to anyone for a fee, or for free to residents of the unincorporated areas of the valley who have a dump card (see below).

Open to all valley residents at no charge:

Open to residents and visitors staying within Big Bear Lake 92315 zip code ONLY:

Clean Bear trash drop off sites

Clean Bear Site #1
41790 Garstin Drive, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315, near the Library & Hospital

Clean Bear Site #2
39690 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake, CA 92315, across from City Hall/Performing Arts Center

*Residents and visitors not living or lodging in the 92315 zip code are NOT permitted to dispose of trash at these sites. Curbside residential trash & recycling service is provided or is your responsibility.

Dump card for residents of unincorporated areas 92314, 92386 & 92333 zip codes:

Residential property owners in these zip codes are automatically assessed an $85.14 solid waste fee by the County each year and are eligible to receive a card for up to 52 loads of household and yard waste to landfills or transfer stations operated by the County at no charge. To receive a card, call County Solid Waste at 909-386-8701 and request it. The card will automatically renew in June each year and will be sent to the property owner, who can give it to a tenant for use. The card must be presented at the weigh-in booth at the transfer station or fees will be required to proceed. Not all materials are permitted to be dumped for free with the card. See the list here. Lost or stolen cards can be replaced for $11 by calling the number above.

Utilities

The grid lists the utility service providers by area. Abbreviations are as follows:

CSD=Big Bear City Community Services District

BVE=Bear Valley Electric

SWG=Southwest Gas

DWP=Big Bear Lake Department of Water & Power

"Septic" means homes have individual septic tanks, not municipal sewers, which must be occasionally pumped and maintained by the home owners.

"Propane" means homes are connected to their own propane gas tank which must be refilled by ordering from any of a few local companies.

"Optional" means that residents have the option of contracting trash service from that company or disposing of it themselves. In other areas, trash service is paid on the property tax bill or contracted exclusively by one provider.
