Weed Abatement & Fire Prevention

Fire prevention is important year-round in Big Bear. Make sure your property is in compliance to avoid large fines, protect your property, and keep the valley safe from fire hazards.

The County of San Bernardino Land Use Services Department is in charge of residential enforcement and is on duty the entire year to address any fire hazards that might be present.

Delinquency notices are sent to homeowners with weeds and fire hazards that have not been properly addressed during the summer--but don't wait! Fines can be hundreds of dollars for properties that do not comply, and the risk of a fire becoming a serious incident is significantly increased on property that is not adequately cleared.

Resources are available for free chipping of yard waste through the Big Bear Fire Department and the Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council (which is exploring the formation of a Big Bear chapter). Typically grant-funded, these programs can change from year to year or run out of funds, so act quickly!

Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) is also a resource for information and assistance in keeping your property fire-safe.
